Take a journey back in time and enjoy a fun-filled, nostalgic day out with this steam train experience for two.
This majestic locomotive has been around for over 200 years and was a key part in the growth of the Industrial Revolution. Seeing these trains up close and in all their glory brings a real sense of history to your day.
Britain boasts more railway attractions per square mile than any other country in the world. With 100 heritage railways, 60 steam museum centres and 700 operational engines all supported by a legion of 23,000 enthusiastic volunteers, a day out on a steam train offers people the chance to savour a bygone age of riding aboard a lovingly preserved locomotive.
Unlike the usual trip on commuter trains, this is one train journey you will not want to end. Instead sit back, relax and enjoy the ride as you meander through some of the most glorious and unspoilt parts of the English countryside.
This is a fantastic day out for everyone and with a choice of scenic locations to choose from, this is a great way to see different parts of the country whilst travelling in style. Some locations offer a whole day rover ticket, enabling you to stop off en route to enjoy some sightseeing or a picnic. At others, your ticket is valid for a return journey.
Please note: If the Steam train is unavailable for reasons beyond the control of the venue it will be replaced by a Diesel train.
Availability: This experience is available on selected March to October dates, however some locations are available throughout the year. Excludes Special Event days.
Duration: The experience can last anything from 35 minutes to a full day, depending on your chosen railway.
Minimum Age: Minimum age restrictions apply, under 17s must be accompanied by an adult.
Spectator Information: You are welcome to bring friends and family, however they will be required to pay for a ticket on the day.

What did you get up to?
We really enjoyed our day out on Nene Valley's steam train. The conductor was very knowledgeable and entertaining, having us laughing loads throughout the journey. The team were also very friendly and happy to answer any questions we had. We got to see the beautiful Peterborough countryside and had the chance to stop at different train stations to take photos of the steam engine and explore the traditional carriages which have been well maintained. Although we were sad to see Thomas the Tank Engine was not feeling too well we wished him a swift recovery! I would definitely recommend this experience as a unique gift for someone, especially if they have an interest in Britain's heritage, or even for yourself if you fancy a day out with a difference.
What did you enjoy the most?
I loved hopping on and off the train to explore different stations.

We arrived at Nene Valley Railway, Wansford a little early, so we sat in the Café and had a Cornish pasty and Cappuccino. We then went outside and walked about until it was time to board the train. You had a choice of private booths or public, we decided on a private booth. First stop Yarwell this is the end of the track in the opposite direction to Peterborough. On route you go through a tunnel that lasts approx. 2 minutes our very knowledgeable conductor Andrew told us that this was the tunnel that was used in the James Bond movie Octopussy. We got off while we waited for the train engine to turn around to go back to Wansford and onto Peterborough, first stop on the journey to Peterborough is Overton where we stepped off for 5 minutes to take in the lovely morning sun and waited for more passengers to board, next stop Orton. Once we got to Peterborough, we took a lovely stroll into town, where we wondered about the malls and shops. On our way back to the station for our journey back home, we stopped along the canal and watch the people feeding the duck and swans. On our journey back we decided to sit in the public booths, we ordered something to drink from the Buffet car on the train, it is very well stocked with food, drinks and all sorts. There are lovely little gift shops at all the stations where you are able to purchase memorabilia or some lovely goodies.

Our favourite part of this experience was chatting to Andrew the conductor whom is very knowledgeable and just taking in the lovely country side. The sheer beauty of the Autunm colours with the changing season.
